The conference excursion will run on the afternoon of Wednesday 3 December. Weather permitting, the excursion will involve a ferry trip to Matiu / Somes Island, in the middle of the harbour. The island has been a site of human habitation since well before the colonial era. In the nineteenth centuries, the island was a quarantine site for recent arrivals to New Zealand. It also served as an internment camp for detainees during the world wars. Later, it was used for the quarantine of imported farm animals. Now, the island is a reserve for native birds and reptiles, including kākāriki, a native parakeet (their name lends itself to the Māori word for “green”), and tuatara, a reptile species that resembles lizards.
